Dust mites are tiny, microscopic organisms that dwell in practically every home. As terrifying a thought as that may be to some, the fact is that dust mites are harmless for most people. For a few people, though, dust mites can cause an allergic reaction, leading to misery and suffering. If you suspect you might be allergic to dust mites, what are some ways to reduce the number of them in your home?

One place that dust mites seem to thrive in is bed linens. However, washing your linens at a high temperature (no less than 140 degrees Fahrenheit) will help to eliminate them from your bedding. If you cannot wash them in hot water, then place them in the dryer on a high-temperature setting for 10 minutes, as this will also get rid of them.

It is a good idea to regularly dust and vacuum throughout the house, including soft furnishings and textiles. If you can, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and use a slightly damp cloth on surfaces so that you prevent spreading dust from one place to another.

High humidity will encourage dust mite populations to grow so, try to reduce it as much as possible. Keep the home well ventilated for a good flow of air through the house. Air purifiers can also be used and work well to control dust mites in the air. Just remember that the majority of dust mites are not airborne, so it will not get rid of them in vast numbers.

It is pretty much impossible to completely rid your home of dust mites, but these simple suggestions will greatly help to reduce their numbers.
